CVE-2026-63686: Apache HTTP Server mod_xml2enc DoS

NULL pointer in mod_xml2enc enables DoS from untrusted backends. CVSS 7.5 high. Fixed in Apache HTTP Server 2.4.69.

CVE-2026-63686: Apache HTTP Server mod_xml2enc DoS

CVE-2026-63686 identifies a null pointer dereference in the mod_xml2enc module of Apache HTTP Server versions prior to 2.4.69 on all operating systems. The vulnerability occurs when the module processes a proxied response from a backend server whose charset conversion partially succeeds then fails. This causes a denial of service (DoS) that may affect the frontend proxy server itself.

The vulnerability carries a CVSS score of 7.5 (High). It was officially published on October 1, 2026 in the NVD database. Apache Software Foundation provides a verified and official fix: upgrading to version 2.4.69. The technical status of the flaw is fully confirmed by the official NVD description. While public repositories on GitHub reference exploit code, the technical data remain coherent and the patch is available immediately.

Administration teams must immediately verify which systems use mod_xml2enc in Apache HTTP Server and deploy the upgrade to version 2.4.69 or later. If the version is prior to 2.4.69, the risk is especially acute in reverse proxy scenarios where responses from untrusted or compromised backends could trigger a denial of service. Plan patch deployment with high priority across all production systems, testing compatibility with other critical modules before rollout.
